Counselor Recognition and Info About the Back to School Health Fair

As summer comes to an end here at Lakes of Savannah, teachers and administrators are preparing for the influx of children in their own schools. So, Alvin ISD is hosting a district wide Back to School Health Fair and Operation Backpack 2019 tomorrow, Saturday, August 10 (more information below). We would also like to recognize one school counselor in particular whose focus was making sure students have the right shoes to walk and run in for this new year by leading SoleMates.

Regina Stredic, Alvin High School counselor with Communities in Schools, has helped students in need for years by “collecting clothes, prom dresses and food.” This year, she heard that students needed shoes. By simply asking her fellow teachers, community and family, Regina was able to coordinate 150 people to donate shoes for 150 students. Through a heartwarming event this past Saturday, students were able to meet and have breakfast with their “Sole Mates” and try on their new shoes. It’s safe to say that Regina played a huge role in helping those students get ready to take on the school year.

If you were unable to pick up a voucher for school supplies, let your child’s school know ASAP. Unfortunately, Alvin ISD has reached capacity for voucher distribution. Volunteers for Alvin ISD’s Operation Backpack have been working tirelessly to set up all the backpacks for students, and “will continue to work with the community partners to provide school supplies for students in need during the first week of school,” according to Alvin ISD’s Facebook Page.

The Back to School Health Fair will also be in full swing at this event! Children and adults can receive Haircuts and Health Screenings. Free Immunizations will be offered for children, but please be sure to bring your child’s immunization records to ensure the process goes smoothly. There will also be various information packets available about “Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicaid, Health, Safety, Nutrition, and more” for you to take home!
