The Drug Awareness Essay Contest, sponsored by the Alvin Rotary Club, is held every year in an effort to teach and warn students about the dangers of drug abuse.
Essays were submitted by the Alvin Independent School District Eighth Grade Students as a class assignment. The students wrote about their feelings about drug abuse and the effect drugs have on themselves and those around them.
Junior High English teachers reviewed the submitted essays and chose one from each class to send the Alvin Rotary Club for judging. The chosen winners and their families were invited to a banquet held by the Alvin Rotary Club in their honor. All winners receive certificates and the top three winner received prizes.
The top three winners were Nolan Ryan Junior High students Essynce Henderson, Claudia Heymach, and Karla Leyja. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Alvin Junior High student Elexis Duckworth, ASSETS student Kaitlyn Woods, and Manvel Junior High student Jacy Jordan.
